Today we are going to learn about Artificial Intelligence. One example of Artificial Intelligence commonly seen today is a smart home. Smart Homes are run by artificial intelligence. Let’s have a look at the some of its key features of smart house:

  • Home appliances are voice controlled
  • Sensors adjust lights and air coolers according to the climate.
  • Security system can detect movement outside and warn the residents.
  • All the appliances are interconnected to each other.
  • It can detect vehicles in the driveway and let the owner know.
  • Home appliances can be controlled remotely through the phone.

Now this is just one example in today’s world. So what’s in it for you today?

Today we are going to cover:

  1. A brief history of artificial intelligence.
  2. What is artificial intelligence?
  3. Types of artificial intelligence
  4. Application of Artificial Intelligence.
  5. A quick glimpse of the future of artificial intelligence

Let’s start with the brief history of Artificial Intelligence:

Let’s start with John McCarthy, he was the first one to coin the word Artificial Intelligence and in 1956 has a first artificial intelligence conference.

Let’s jump to 1969 where “Shakey” was the first general purpose mobile Robot built and although by today’s standards he was very simple. He did mark a milestone, but we are now processing data differently, who is now able to do things with a purpose vs. just a list of instructions. It included things like turning on and off lights and pushing boxes around the room.

We are now going to move forward to 1997. In 1997 a super computer ‘Deep Blue’ was designed which defeated the world chess champion in a game. This is the first time that we are actually seeing the computer using logic to be a human when doing some kind of logical things. So this is again a huge milestone by IIBM to create a large computer to be able to do that in a timely fashion.

Let’s just jump to 2002 when we have a first commercially successful Robotic Vacuum Cleaner. Back in 2002 that was the first model put out and finally 2005 to 2018 till today in the last more than decade we have speech recognition RPA, dancing Robot, Smart homes and many more to come from AI.

What I want you to notice about this information on history of AI is the compression of time in 1956 which was just a name and more than 10 years later we have our ‘Shakey’, the first one robot which was able to put light switches. Then we go all the way to 1997 where we got ‘Deep Blue’ who is a lot of steps between 1956 and 1997. They did had a lot of ties but still he was able to defeat a human in a chess game and then only in 4 years later  there we have first commercially successful robotic vacuum cleaner. Then from here we go to 2005 to 2018. We go from simple speech recognition to very complicated and really able to register with Google voice. We have a series of RPA, we has a dancing robots, smart homes and many more to come from AI. These are coming out almost monthly in the world of AI.

So what is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence is a form of computer science used to create intelligent machines that can recognize Human speech, objects, can learn, plan and solve problems like humans.

I would like you to focus on just the last one sentence i.e. can learn to solve problems like humans. The example of which we saw earlier, in which a computer can defeat a chess champion, before that it was able to turn on and off the lights. So right now our concept of AI is based primarily on understanding of our learning about how to interact with humans and how we can compare it to humans. So speech recognition is a big one today also object detection solve problem and learn from the given data and plan and approach for future tasks to be done.

These are all very human things that we do to deploy and solve for the future.

Types of Artificial Intelligence:

Hi! Heard you want to know the types of Artificial Intelligence –

The first type is: ‘Purely reactive’.

The second type is: ‘Limited memory’.

The third type is: ‘Theory of mind’ :-

which is still on the process of being invented and definitely the question of ‘Self awareness’ being the fourth which is still not invented, looks like these are little close.

Here we have Purely reactive’: He does not have any past memory or data to work with. He takes actions or reacts based on what he feels. Okay! It’s not that tough. Observes every move and wins and takes the best possible decisions. Purely reactive machines specialized in one field of work only. In this case we see it playing a chess game where he gives out a best moves from all the different moves. May be its calculating the next one in a row may be there are many reactions they don’t have a lot of data, they just have what in front of them.

Next, look at “Limited Memory’:

Let’s try to understand the limited memory setup. These machines use previous data and keen adding it to their memory. For example: – suggest me a good restaurant! So if you want to know a good restaurant then he goes through previous location data and can suggest – I see you have been to KFC quite a lot in the past week there is a KFC nearby! So thus it goes through a previous location data and where they went and checks it and Hmmm! This one probably a good suggestion for tonight. Thanks!

They have enough memory or experience to make proper decisions. But the memory is very limited. This is trying to guess what previous new location would be or it just takes the decision based on what he has. This gives just suggestions about how you should go.

Theory of mind: –

This kind of an AI has the capacity to understand thought and emotions and interact socially. A machine based on this type of qualities is yet to build. Like: that human looks lonely, hey human you want to be my friend? Huh? Okay!

Theory of mind is a thing of a future. Suddenly we see a lot of industries looking little bit at this as ways to guess how you feel about things. For most that is still based on previous data you know. Yes, No, 2 thumbs up, one thumb down, they are trying to understand the emotions behind it.

And finally we get into the Sci-fi futuristic i.e. Self –aware:

Self aware machines are the future generation of machines. They will be super intelligent, sensitive and conscious like the term ‘Self aware!’ For now these are just a movie characters or cartoon characters but we are getting closer to see them in real world. Hopefully there would be type of good guys and not the bad guys. We all saw in AI sci-fi movies.

Applications of AI:

Let’s take a look at the some of the today’s commercial business uses for the AI. We have banking –fraud detection from a large data consisting of fraudulent and non-fraudulent transactions. The AI learns to predict if a new transaction is fraud or not.

Online customer support: – most of the customer support is now being automated by AI.

Cyber security: – Using machine learning algorithm and a lot of sample data, AI can be used to detect anomalies, adapt and respond to threats.

Virtual assistance: – SIRI, CORTANA, ALEXA and Google Now use voice recognition to follow the user’s command.

These are all wonderful examples of current AI used in commercial world. And these ones in particular have matured over the last half a decade. For instance, very few large banks in today’s world would like to use it for fraudity detection or whether this person is good to give a loan or not? Based on his credit scores and where he is from? And their income. Same with Cyber Security. Detecting anomalies, if they have one person doing that, which will take him a year, just to do if they did approach yesterday and off course first a virtual assistance.

Future of AI: –

If we see it from a commercial business wise then where is it going off course the imaginations are limited on this which you can already see the development in the world today. For automated transportation will become a common thing in the future. Humans will be able to adjust themselves with robots or when I am doing reports or something else on the computer it can work for me, that I am fed up to think about. Other things there are the more numbers of smart cities as vehicles, phones, Home appliances will be run by AI. ‘Home Robots’ will help elderly people with their day to day work. Robots will take over riskyjobs, like bomb defusing, welding etc. For the future of AI, you can see here a number of robotic uses that are already in development. People already working on development. People already working on these and trying to bring them to us in a commercial business fashion. Your own imagination can take us to the next level or simple Google search show you some of the steps that are out there now an addition to this.
